About

Project Background

The Ties That Bind AVL is a participatory public art installation created by artist Emily Clanton. It builds on her earlier research at the Center for Arts in Medicine at the University of Florida. It continues her exploration of how collaborative creative actions can foster connection during challenging — and sometimes isolating — times.

The project began on May 18, 2025, during the 2nd annual Community Gathering of Grief and Joy, hosted by Kristie Beth Ihde on behalf of Enspiraré, a coaching program for those navigating loss and seeking meaningful transformation through personal reflection and ritual.

May 18 is considered Day 0 of this project, as the activity was in service of the Community Gathering of Grief and Joy. Guided by the gathering's purpose and atmosphere, the piece has evolved into a site-specific activity accessible to anyone passing by.

Occasional off-site facilitation also makes it possible for people to participate in other locations.

The Ties That Bind AVL is a temporary installation that will remain open for public participation until October 2025. After removal, the tied fabric strips will be transformed into a new work, converting participant energy into another form.

The project is rooted in participatory public art, the benefits of repeated, tactile creative acts, and a commitment to inclusive, accessible methods that meet people where they are.

The invitation is simple:

Take a strip of fabric. Tie it to the fence with a wish or worry in mind. Leave it behind.
