The Ties That Bind Asheville
Emily Clanton — Lead Artist, Site Tender, Principal Investigator
Tie a ribbon. Let it go.
The Ties That Bind Asheville is an artist-led participatory installation that invited visitors to tie cloth ribbons to a shared fence, offering individual gestures of reflection, remembrance, and release. Over five months, these contributions accumulated into a living tapestry shaped by many hands within a clear, artist-defined, time-bound container.
Each ribbon carried a personal meaning, such as a wish, memory, or message, while the artist maintained the installation's structure and ethical framework.
The work evolved slowly through daily participation, seasonal change, and sustained presence in public space.
On November 7, 2025, the installation reached its planned closure. Fabric gathered from the site will be incorporated into new artworks by the artist, extending the life of the project while honoring the many distinct contributions made.
